NORFOLK

I have finally arrived in Norfolk, Virginia for the start of the 2012 season. This Spring Training was by far the fastest spring I have ever experienced in my six year career. I still feel like I just arrived in Sarasota a few days ago and it has already been seven weeks. Anyways, we open the regular season up tomorrow night in Charlotte, North Carolina against the Chicago White Sox Triple-A team. As I type this, we are on a bus making the five and a half hour trip down south. This is my first time ever traveling on a sleeper bus, which may just be the coolest thing I have ever experienced. We have a beautiful big screen television, outlets for our electronics, wifi that is actually going fast enough for me to browse the Internet, and beds that are more comfortable than the one I slept in last night at my apartment.

Speaking of apartments, I moved into my new place a few days ago. The first few years of my professional career I would chose low price over comfort when it came to my living arrangements for the summer. After realizing that when it comes to apartment living you definitely get what you pay for, I've changed my strategy over the last few years and now go with something that I will enjoy living in for the five month season, even if it costs me a little more money. Anyways, after walking into my new apartment I knew right away it was going to be a good summer. Comfortable sofa, nice size television, working appliances, and good water pressure. I was pretty damn excited, that is until I decided to go to sleep. I found out rather quickly that we have a light rail transit system that I swear passes directly through my bedroom. Starting at around six AM and repeating every five minutes until I wave the white flag and get out of bed, I listen to a mini train pass directly outside my bedroom window. I can't describe how torturous the sound is, but this should give you a good idea.

When we return to Norfolk on Sunday night I'm going to first try a sound machine app on my IPhone. If that doesn't work, I may go with a heavy duty fan or maybe some earplugs, although I don't know how comfortable that will be. If you have any good ideas please let me know!

For some positive news, there is a Chipotle about one minute from my apartment. I know it is quite sad, but the first thing I did when looking at apartments was to check how far the nearest Chipotle was located. If only they had some type of reward system similar to frequent flyer miles. I swear, if I ever become a Major League player good enough to be on a commercial, I will sign the first exclusive deal with Chipotle in return for a lifetime supply of burritos.

Well, I think I may take a little nap before we arrive in North Carolina so I will talk to you all later on. Take care!

  2. I would've chosen the apt near a Chipotle too. Try ear plugs. I sleep w/ ear plugs every night. They make a difference. Just change 'em often. Ear infections suck as an adult. Wish you the best of luck this season, Matt!!

  3. Welcome to VA! Hopefully I'll be seeing you play sometime this season! I hope your sleep situation works out. I always use a loud fan. Chipotle is probably my favorite too.. and I go there minimum once a week for lunch breaks. Mmm. I'm going there tomorrow. It's been over a week.

  5. Next time, look for a place in a quiet part of town.
That said, Chipotle and Popeyes, and of course a good pizza place would be on my list.

  6. Trains can be a cool sound once you're accustomed to them. Go with the ear plugs, but be aware that you may not need them within a week.

I've been reading "Out of My League". Do you concur with Hayhurst's description of the bar meal in Salt Lake City?

    Good luck on Opening Night.

  7. I have never seen or knew that sleeper buses existed but it sounds so awesome! I wondered what all those International League Teams did being only a few miles from each other.

HEY! You don't know how long you are going to be in that apartment, it could be 4 months or 4 days, you're on the 40 man and can be called up anytime. You did great last year, could happen really soon.

  8. A fan should work to help drown out the noise of the trains, unless of course the noise of the fan irritates you too. Then I'd go with the ear plugs - but those things can be super uncomfortable and just all around suck dog balls.

It's a shame that Freebirds hasn't made it's way to the east coast yet. So much better than Chipotle (yeah, I know I'll likely have rocks thrown at me by Chipotle fanatics now).

  9. Work hard and get back to the bigs soon. I've had you on my fantasy team for the past 3 years. I believe you'll be great once you get the shot.

  10. Matt, first I wanted to tell you that my dad played Babe Ruth league baseball with your dad in Peabody and he also attended SJP. I was in Sarasota in the middle of February and hoping to see you but only pitchers and catchers were there. I also wanted to say that I am absolutely obsessed with Chipotle and I was wondering what you get? I get a burrito bowl with white rice no beans chicken ALL four salsas sour cream cheese and lettuce.

  11. Nats fan, but ODU grad too, so I spent a lot of time in Norfolk. I bet I even know the general area where you live (don't worry, I won't start stalking you). While I hope that you make it back to the bigs soon, I hope that you are able to enjoy your time with the Tides and in Norfolk. If you have not been yet, you MUST get over to Doumar's at some point. You will understand once you have been there the first time (and you will go back. Trust me!)

  13. Funny stuff and I was shocked to actually hear that you didn't mind the bus trip - I was expecting elitist whining about no planes. Good for you! I share your love for Chipotle but mine (locations) are an hour away either here in FL or in OH where I "summer". Have fun and get back to Baltimore soon - we need you at third and with your OBP! You are the kind of player we all love to love - well not like Shoshana but you know.
