MY NAME IS...

This was a post that I wanted to put up here a few months ago during Spring Training but for some reason forgot. I'm not sure why it is, but I get called Mark Antonelli a lot. I know Matt and Mark are semi close, but they are two pretty different names. I don't go around calling Billy, Bobby, or Tom, Tim, but for some reason a lot of people call me Mark. The craziest thing is that I get announced as Mark in a lot of ballparks that I have played in. I've gone entire games from the 1st at-bat until the last with, "now batting #9 Mark Antonelli." The announcer has the lineup card right in front of him, which makes it even more mind boggling. The fact that I get called the wrong name a lot doesn't really bother me, it just makes me wonder why it happens so much.

A few years ago I was invited out to San Diego during the off-season to take part in Friar Fest. While I was out there we had a charity lunch with an organization that made homemade cookies for all of the players. I was called up to grab my cookie, and when I looked down at it, this is what I saw. I couldn't help but laugh.

  1. That's the reason I like to watch the Padres and Dodgers play on Prime Ticket. Vin Scully is hands down the best broadcaster that is still alive, he always gets the players name wrong. It is the funnest thing. Just not that long ago he spent almost the whole night calling Will Venable "Max Venable". It wasn't till his third at bat that Scully corrected him self and told everyone that Max is Will's father. He does that with alot of players during the season. He makes Baseball that much more fun to watch. When you come back up and you play the Dodgers, don't be surprised if calls you "Mark" all night.

  2. And now the Padres have Dick Enberg, who also gets names wrong, so your fate is sealed!

  3. hahaha The Cookie. It is so cute and so little league, I would have freaked out if I got something like that in Tee-Ball. I wonder if the people that made the cookies, think all of you guys go out with the coach after the game for ice-cream.

  4. That's awesome. I feel your pain...I'm a Craig that gets called Greg like 75% of the time. BTW, do you have any good nicknames. We were thinking of starting a fan section for you down in the beer garden if you are going to play in Portland this year.
